Turning Spindle, also known as turning between centers, is an artistic woodturning technique referring to a straight piece of wood being turned onto its central axis by means of a turning wood lathe. Turning of this type of lathe is done in a variety of ways and can be performed by hand, on a lathe with a rotating arm or on a lathe using a spindle.
Turning is normally done by using a turning tool such as a turning screw, spindle or a turning bar. Some turning tools may also be used for wood turning. Turning tool sets are available with either single or double turning rods and a complete range of turning tools is available. It is important to remember that when using a turning tool set it is very important to use the appropriate length turning rod for the workpiece and the size of turning the workpiece to be turned.
Turning workpieces are usually mounted in a wood lathe (also called a lathe block) which is used to support the piece while it is being turned. Turning workpieces can either be in the horizontal position or in the vertical position. The height of the workpiece, and the distance from the top of the lathe to the turning rod, may also affect the length of turning rod used.
A turning tool set consists of three parts: the turning rod, the turning table and the cutting die. When starting a turning task, it is a good idea to work out how much material and turning time will be required for the job. The amount of turning time required is usually determined by the type of turning workpiece required and the size of the turning equipment used.
Turning workpieces can be manufactured in many different shapes and sizes. For example, the turning block used to support a working piece may be designed to accommodate a variety of different turning tasks. For example, a cutting table may be used for a small wood turn. As well as being able to provide support, it can also provide access to the working piece, to hold the cutting tools whilst they are being used and so on. As more materials are turned, the cutting table may need to be modified, for example by adding a bench or a seat.
Lathes can be made from a variety of materials including metal, wood or plastic. The turning equipment and cutting tool set used will depend on what sort of turning task the lathe is used for and how much turning power it needs.
